چکیده

The capacity fade of Sony 18650 Li-ion cells increases with increase in temperature. After 800 cycles, the cells cycled at RT and 45 8C showed a capacity fade of 30 and 36%, respectively. The cell cycled at 55 8C showed a capacity loss of about 70% after 490 cycles. The rate capability of the cells continues to decrease with cycling. Impedance measurements showed an overall increase in the cell resistance with cycling and temperature. Impedance studies of the electrode materials showed an increased positive electrode resistance when compared to that of the negative electrode for cells cycled at RT and 45 8C. However, cells cycled at 50 and 55 8C exhibit higher negative electrode resistance. The increased capacity fade for the cells cycled at high temperatures can be explained by taking into account the repeated film formation over the surface of anode, which results in increased rate of lithium loss and also in a drastic increase in the negative electrode resistance with cycling. # 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Capacity fade study of lithium-ion batteries cycled at high discharge rates

Capacity fade of Sony US 18650 Li-ion batteries cycled using different discharge rates was studied at ambient temperature. The capacity losses were estimated after 300 cycles at 2C and 3C discharge rates and were found to be 13.2 and 16.9% of the initial capacity, respectively. At 1C discharge rate the capacity lost was only 9.5%. The cell cycled at high discharge rate (3C) showed the largest i...

Simulation of charge–discharge cycling of lithium-ion batteries under low-earth-orbit conditions

Charge–discharge behavior of SONY 18650 lithium-ion batteries for aerospace applications was simulated under low-earth-orbit (LEO) condiions, by using a first-principles based mathematical model. The model determines the capacity fade on the basis of the irreversible loss of active ithium ions due to electrolyte reduction. The capacity fade during LEO cycling was studied for 5 years of continuo...

Studies on capacity fade of lithium-ion batteries

The capacity fade of Sony 18650S Li-ion cells has been analyzed using cyclic voltammetry, impedance spectroscopy and electron Ž . Ž . Ž . probe microscopic analysis EPMA . The surface resistance at both the positive LiCoO and negative carbon electrodes were found to 2 increase with cycling. This increase in resistance contributes to decreased capacity. Impedance data reveal that the interfacial...

Analysis of capacity fade in a lithium ion battery

Two parameter estimation methods are presented for online determination of parameter values using a simple charge/discharge model of a Sony 18650 lithium ion battery. Loss of capacity and resistance increase are both included in the model. The first method is a hybrid combination of batch data reconciliation and moving-horizon parameter estimation. A discussion on the selection of tuning parame...
